About Eli Shumar - CEO, Entrepreneur, Philanthropist



Eli Shumar is a self-made man and an icon in the Fayette community.

Eli graduated in 1965, at the time, Redstone but later Brownville School district.

After graduation he desired to join the military but due to a fractured leg he was rated 4-F and was unable.

Eli attended the Technical Training School of Uniontown and majored in Welding, he graduated in 1966. He then went on to attend an Electronic School in Washington D.C.

After that, he was employed at Hydraulic Jack Repair, being accepted into their apprenticeship program; Eli continued his studies there in machining, electrical, tool and die making and hydraulics.

He left Hydraulic Jack Repair and went on his own in 1974 to start Shumar Welding and Machine Services, Inc.
Being in business, now over 40 years, Shumars has become a leader in the arenas of energy and defense. 
Shumars employees an average of 80 full-time employees, manufacturing many types of equipment for the long wall mining industry also supporting our homeland security, Naval and overseas troops with various military equipment. 
Shumars maintains a large customer base over the years i.e. US Steel, Bethlehem Steel, Consol Coal, ArgonST/Boeing and many others. 
Eli is also in a partnership with Brier Hill Steel.

Shumars also supports the local community, businesses, schools and Boy Scouts.
Mr. Shumar is in good standing with the Fay Penn Economic Development Council, as many of his employees also have seats on numerous advisory boards for businesses and schools, supporting the local community with employment opportunities and education.

Eli was voted by Fay Penn as “Man of the Year” a number of years ago, along with countless other acknowledgements over his years in business. 
In 2014, Shumars was honored by Boeing, Inc. for supplying the 100th Winching System for the AN/SLQ-25A Surface Ship Torpedo Defense System for the US Navy.
Also, Shumars was awarded in June - Business of the Year – Fayette County CTI – 2013-2014 for our support with the technical school.

Eli is married to the former Betty Hlatky. 
He is also championed by his children, Richard and Tina and step children, Andy, Christina and Jolene. Eli also enjoys his many grandchildren and step grandchildren.
